Description

Strottner-Drechsler 139 / Skarpens's nebula is a confirmed, previously unknown planetary nebula in the constellation Cygnus.

StDr 139 is located about 4000 light years from Earth and lies in the middle of the Cygnus Expanse, only a few arc minutes away from NGC 6884.

Finding a new PN in such a frequently photographed region as Cygnus is extremely rare and therefore we are very excited! StDr 139 was discovered by the German-French discovery team around Marcel Drechsler and Strottner in October 2021 using digital sky surveys.

On a large photomosaic of the Cygnus region made by myself, the PN could also be confirmed. ( https://www.astrobin.com/i3jga7/ )
A spectroscopic measurement by Pascal le Dû from France showed that StDr 139 is indeed a true PN.

Because the planetary nebula is particularly rich in ionised oxygen (OIII), the shell of the dying star appears in a bright turquoise blue. I finally asked the team to photograph the new PN candidate with my AG Optical Convergent FA14 in Spain.
You can see the exciting result here.
